Proform 990 CSE EllipticalProform 990 CSE elliptical machine

Price: $999

Bottom Line:On the surface the Proform 990 CSE (an Icon brand) appears to be a sturdy, feature-rich, entry level elliptical trainer coming in at $999.00; however, with the common Proform issues of a noisy drive system, low quality plastic parts, and user discomfort this machine leaves a lot to be desired.

Thoughts: Like other Proform elliptical trainers, the 990 CSE is a feature-rich machine that attempts to deliver a feeling of total workout customization to the user. This machine offers 16 digital resistance levels, a space saving design, 20 preset workouts, iFit functionality, and an incline adjustment feature. We were very excited about this elliptical machine because it appeared to be well-built and have more to offer than some other similarly priced Proform options, but in the end we were disappointed. The drive system was noisy, the display was difficult to read at times, and we found the "quick-touch" workout adjustment controls; they are built into the handles, were easily hit by mistake, adding unnecessary frustration to workouts. In addition to these faults, the hand positioning on the 990 CSE by Proform is very awkward and was a primary cause of discomfort during a workout. All in all, the Proform 990 CSE is a seemingly more substantial elliptical machine when compared to other Proform machines in the same price-range; however, the 990 CSE while offering a lot of features, including incline adjustment, still suffers from several problems we found hard to overlook. If you want a comfortable, reliable, and enjoyable workout we would recommend looking into a higher quality elliptical trainer.
