Price: $1,999

Bottom Line:The NordicTrack A.C.T Commercial elliptical trainer offers a space saving design and lots of user comfort options, but tends to ostracize different body types. Coming in at $1,999.00, this machine does have a unique design, but not without with a fair share of design flaws.

Thoughts: The A.C.T. Commercial by NordicTrack (an Icon brand) is a very unique elliptical. On the surface it looks like a great idea because of the space it saves over single rear or front systems. However this design has some serious design issues that we could not overlook. For starters, the "natural stance position" is actually quite uncomfortable on the knees. This design may be comfortable for a very specific body type, however, the average user will probably find this pedal positioning very uncomfortable. The next major problem stems from the noise produced by the dual drive system design. By having two motors (one that operates each pedal arm) there is twice the number of moving parts over a more typical single front or rear drive design. This can result in more frequent breakdowns, higher part replacement costs, and user frustration. One feature we were impressed with was the ability to adjust the stride length from 18"-22", but we were let down by the 250lb weight capacity. The A.C.T. is intended to be a commercial grade machine that could hold its own in a gym setting; however, we disagree with this claim. This elliptical trainer is only comfortable for a small sector of body types and sacrifices key quality design features to maintain a space saving form. The NordicTrack A.C.T. Commercial may fit the very specific needs of a select few due to its unique design; however, we'd recommend a more inclusive, high quality, and user-friendly elliptical trainer. Brands such as Smooth Fitness, Precor, and Life Fitness would be great alternatives.
